Proscar 1.25mg is a prescription medication that contains the active ingredient finasteride. It is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) where the prostate gland becomes enlarged and causes urination problems.

This works by blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which is a hormone that causes prostate growth. By reducing DHT in the prostate Proscar can relieve symptoms such as difficulty urinating, frequent urination and urinary urgency.

Along with treating BPH, it has also been used off-label for hair loss in men as DHT is a major cause of male pattern baldness. However, if used for hair loss the dosage is much lower than for BPH and it is not FDA-approved for hair loss.
